Indiana University - Kelley Business School

MBA/Telecom Program: Requirements

Joint Degree: Master of Arts in Telecommunications or Master or Science in Telecommunications and Master of Business Administration in the Kelley School of Business

To be eligible to receive the degrees of Master of Business Administration and Master of Arts or Master of Science in Telecommunications, which must be received simultaneously, a student must:

  1. complete 42 credit hours in the Kelley School of Business, including all of the required course work; and
  2. complete 27 credit hours for the Master of Arts in Telecommunications or 33 credit hours for the Master of Science in Telecommunications, including all of the required course work; and
  3. earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on all work taken in the telecommunications program and a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 on all work taken in the Kelley School of Business; and
  4. be in residence for six semesters (or their equivalent of full-time resident study; three of these semesters must be in telecommunications and three must be in the Kelley School of Business).

Program Requirements

The program requires 27 credit hours for the Master of Arts or 33 credit hours for the Master of Science and 42 credit hours in Business for graduation. Non-joint study for the Master of Arts degree requires 30 credit hours and the Master of Science 36 credit hours for graduation while the MBA requires a minimum of 54 credit hours.

Of the 42 credit hours required for joint-degree students in the MBA program, 21 of these hours represent required courses. With the remaining 21 credit hours, students are able to develop a specialization. The flexibility of the curriculum allows joint candidates students to pursue any one of our standard 15 credit-hour majors, which is required for graduation, along with additional electives.

Summer school in Telecommunications during the first or second summer of the joint program is encouraged to help the joint candidate attain increased credit hours and ease potential scheduling conflicts between the two schools.

Graduation Requirements

Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 on all work taken in the Department of Telecommunications and a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 on all work taken in the Kelley School of Business.

Students pursuing the joint MBA/Telecom joint degree must complete all requirements for both programs for graduation and must file separately with both the Telecommunications Department and the Kelley School of Business. To gain the advantage of the credit hours reduction of the MBA/Telecom joint degree, the degrees must be awarded on the same graduation date.

Transfer Credit

Every MBA must complete 42 hours as a regularly admitted and enrolled MBA student; no transfer credit is ever given to joint candidates. Graduate business course work at Indiana University completed before MBA admission does not count toward the degree. Students cannot use graduate business course work to apply towards both the MBA and Telecommunications requirements.
